Wayfinding

Helping people find their way

Great wayfinding is about helping people enjoy the journey as much as the destination. It’s the art of giving people the confidence to navigate complex places without difficulty or distraction. And the answer is this way.

DNCO VA WAYFINDING 9

A four-dimensional problem
Wayfinding is a complex problem and we like to look at the project from all sides, understanding your needs and aspirations and how to best collaborate. There will be strategic decisions about how we want to move people around a space, as well as aesthetic considerations about the end finish. This stage helps everyone know exactly where they stand.

Method navigating
Next we look through the eyes and ears of your users. We work through how they approach the space and the questions they ask themselves along the way. It allows us to establish a coherent family of signs in the right locations that people can follow, ensuring no-one is lost or overwhelmed along the way.

DNCO VA PROCESS 03

dn&co’s interest in the needs of our visitors, their understanding of the museum’s operations and attention to detail were exemplary. They weren’t afraid to challenge our assumptions, and took time to work through their ideas to be certain we reached the best solution.

Look and feel
Form follows function and it’s only now that we begin to envisage how things will actually look on the ground. Or in the air, on the wall, or beneath your feet. Considering material, colour, typography, scale, ergonomics and accessibility we create a schematic design response that’s harmonious yet hardworking and always highly considered. Successful designs can define a place for generations.

Together to the finish line
We create detailed construction design drawings that enable a level-field tender exercise, so production partners are all costing exactly what has been agreed with no hidden surprises. We visit factories and obsess over detail before we oversee installation. And once the dust has settled, we continue to offer advice so the system we have created remains relevant, functional and beautiful.
